Faster, greener, neater

​​​​​​​​​​​​​8 storeys in only 12 weeks. Short assembly time on the site was possible due to the Stora Enso ​CLT.
This unique eight-storey building in London is one of the tallest timber residential structures in the world. It marks the first time that CLT has been chosen in the UK for an entire multi-storey structure, including the ground floor, which is traditionally constructed from concrete. ​

“I love building with CLT. It’s fast and simple to use as well as clean and precise”, says Terry Waite, site manager for the main contractor at Bridport House. 
Bridport House in London, Hackney, marks the first time that cross-laminated timber (CLT) has been chosen in the UK for an entire multi-storey structure, including the ground floor, which is traditionally constructed from concrete. CLT is factory-made and delivered to the construction site for assembly. ​“There is far less waste than in conventional construction”, Waite points out. ​According to Waite, the main contractor Willmott Dixon’s workers also liked building with prefabricated timber as opposed to steel or concrete. “It is a nicer and cleaner material to work with.”
​Likewise, the architects at Karakusevic Carson Architects designing Bridport House enjoyed working with Stora Enso’s CLT. “The product offers total freedom to design architecture that will stand the test of time.” Bridport House represents architecture that is high-quality, expressive, robust, simple and of a durable and lasting nature.

Cost effective carbon sink
The owner of the building, the London Borough of Hackney, chose to use environmentally friendly material to meet their sustainability objectives. Furthermore, the cost-effectiveness of CLT helped to keep the actual construction costs of Bridport House under budget in the end.
Construction with timber is a sustainable way of building. The environmental advantage of using timber as a main construction material is that it stores carbon dioxide thus significantly reducing the global amount of CO2. According to the calculations for Bridport House, each apartment contains 30 – 40 m³ of timber, which is equivalent to more than 30 tonnes of absorbed CO2.

41 sunny apartments
Bridport House is made up of altogether 41 maisonettes and apartments. The building is orientated east-west, so all residents can enjoy the morning or evening sun. Family units with private entrances are located on the ground floor while a range of 1 – 3 bedroom apartments are located on the upper floors.
The key objective of the design team was to achieve a practical and economical layout using the flexible CLT building system, which presents no limitations to the architecture, design or style of a building. CLT boards were prefabricated according to the architect’s designs. ​
